“Play is the work of the child.” – Maria Montessori
Research has shown that play is vital for young children’s development and learning. Through play, children are strengthening their cognitive and social-emotional capacities that enable them to control impulses, make plans, and stay focused. These are called executive function and self-regulation skills. Children and youth need these skills to be successful in school and life. This workshop is for any educator, however, there will be a particular focus on early childhood educators working with young children, infancy through third grade, and their families. The workshop will be structured as a dialogue about how children’s play contributes to the development of these critical life skills; the role of the teacher and the child(ren); and resources for educators, including how to promote play during COVID times. Early childhood educators who work in programs licensed by DHS will be given a set of reflection questions and a professional development certificate.
