Research shows that integrating music into a child’s life facilitates learning in other subjects at school and enhances skills that children inevitably use in diverse areas of their lives. At Hanahau‘oli School, the integration of music into every child’s education emphasizes singing, exploring and playing instruments, moving to the music and using concepts and skills to create, improvise and compose. At this two hour on-line experience parents and caregivers will have the opportunity to learn from Hanahau‘oli School music teacher Leah Abbe Bloem, about why music education is important and how families can integrate music education and play into their lives at home. ʻUkulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro will join the session and engage participants in a series of activities and strategies to help you get started with making music at home with your kids. This will be hands-on and experiential, and the event will conclude with a “kanikapila” jam session in which all participants (children welcome!) will be guided through live music making using the instruments you have in your home.

This event is sponsored by Hui Hanahau'oli, who offers a number of Parent Enrichment activities to current families in the Hanahau'oli School community each year. Hui Hanahau’oli is extending their resources to parents in the greater community during this challenging and historic time, and invites you to join parents from near and far in our celebration of progressive education.

Jake Shimabukuro Almost everyone in Hawai’i has picked up an ‘ukulele at one time or another. Not many, however, have done with it what Jake Shimabukuro has accomplished since he first picked up the instrument at the age of four. A graduate of Kaimuki High School, Jake first learned to play the ‘ukulele from his mother, Carol, and looked to such masters as Eddie Kamae, Ohta-san, and Roy Sakuma to develop his craft. Jake continues to compose and record music, while maintaining an international concert schedule of 140 live performances a year. In addition to recently being nominated by President Joe Biden to serve on the National Council on the Arts, Jake remains firmly rooted in his commitment to community service and music in education. With his love for the ‘ukulele, Jake frequently performs at schools urging students to “say no to drugs” and discover their passion.
