This Hands-on workshop is ideal for children grades K to 8 and educators who work with elementary and middle school age children. The workshop focuses on connecting keiki, families, and educators to place-based resources that bridge the process of building, creating, and imagining Hawaiʻi through their own experiences. The diorama making and animation activities give children two ways for self-directed learning at home this Summer or in schools. Participants will learn about some of Hawaiʻi’s most amazing and endemic forest species by imagining and creating their very own rainforest diorama. Additionally, participants will learn about the symbiotic relationships shared between our endemic manu (birds) and kumulāʻau (trees). In the second part of the workshop, participants will learn how to take their kilo practice and create a pixel animation using a free digital application, Piskel. Please note: Children grades K to 2 will need extra assistance with their dioramas and technical assistance for the animation portion of the workshop.
