How might we build community in uncertain times and spaces?

How might we, as educators, support one another in doing so?

These questions will guide this 2-day online workshop which aims to create an intellectually safe space for educators to converse, collaborate, connect, and build community, starting with self (I) and leaving with new ideas and affirmations (ʻae) - together.

Over the last year and a half, the level of disconnectedness has not only increased among students, but across campuses in general. Now, possibly more than ever, students need time to process, think, reflect, and connect as part of their return to learning. However, this will not be possible in the educational environment if teachers are not taking the time to do the same.

Teachers rarely receive professional development at the school level on how to build community through discussion, reflection, collaboration, and sharing. Dedicating time to do so often has to be put to the side to prioritize standards, content, and assessments. This workshop is in response to the need for teachers to have a space to connect, share and exchange ideas, and support one another as we navigate our new educational landscape and address the challenges our students, and ourselves, may face.

During this workshop, participants will engage in collaborative inquiry and discussion with the intent to:

  • connect and begin to build a supportive community of learners

  • learn about and apply principles of Philosophy for Children Hawaiʻi (p4cHI)

  • provide and receive support on ways to build community in classrooms

  • exchange ideas and gain new perspectives

  • gather resources and learn strategies to implement with students

  • consider implementation of concepts in classrooms
