Arting and Writing to Transform Education

5:30-7:30 PM

What is arting? It is when the visual arts are animated! Writers animate through writing. Visual artists then, animate through arting. Traditionally, the visual arts and literary arts have been taught as stand-alone subjects, when in fact their greatest relevance is their capacity to intersect and meaning-make together. This presentation will include a book talk followed by a hands-on arting and writing experience to support educators in making transformative connections between the literary and the visual arts.

This two hour workshop will consist of a book talk and workshop. In the first hour, we will learn more about arting and writing from authors Meleanna Meyer, Miki Maeshiro, and Anna Sumida, who will provide highlights of their recently published book, ARTING AND WRITING TO TRANSFORM EDUCATION: An Integrated Approach for Culturally and Ecologically Responsive Pedagogy (2018). This is the first pedagogical text printed in full color that truly represents the Hawaiian and local culture, places and faces of Hawaiʻi. Highlights from the presentation will include:

  • Culture as a Tool for Student Agency and Transformation Key idea: Cultural identity develops personal agency. Culture is dynamic at four interdependent levels: Home, Host/Indigenous, Local and Global

  • Arting and Writing in Parallel — Catalysts for Transformation Key idea: The two processes are likened to haku or lei making. View a diagram of this concept here.

  • Cultivating Relationships with All Living Things Key idea: Active seeing (observation) are foundational for details, descriptive words, creativity, exploration, and more.

  • Empowering Students and Teachers to Tell Their Stories Key Idea: Samples of student work will be shared to inspire arting and writing in your classroom and homes.

In the second hour, the presenters invite you to join in a hands-on experience to create one of the activities presented in the textbook, an arting and writing mini notebook. With their coaching, you’ll thoughtfully employ this seemingly simple but complex tool for inspiring and challenging students to seek out their own insights and answers. Learn more about the mini book activity here. Simply come prepared with a sheet of letter or legal sized paper, something to color with, and scissors.
