With the challenges of distance learning, students’ sense of autonomy, their sense of their unique selves, and their power have diminished. Schooling from home eliminates myriad choices normally encountered in face-to-face school; who to play with during recess, who to sit with during lunch, who to work with in a group project are just a few of the independent decisions our children make each day. A strong sense of autonomy is an essential element in nurturing a child’s resilience - the ability to bounce back in the face of challenges - to handle disappointment and failure with grace and confidence, and to approach new experiences with optimism to say, “I can do this!”
Family meetings are an effective structure for honoring the voice of each member of the family in a system that models the world beyond the home. With its co-created norms, they are an opportunity for honest communication, for resolving conflicts, and for collaborative planning. Through this experience, children grow in their ability to express themselves and learn how to face challenges creatively and cooperatively. Join Linda Inlay of Awakening Wisdom in a 90 minute public talk aimed at presenting parents with practical information on how to use this valuable tool to grow essential life skills.
This event is sponsored by Hui Hanahau'oli, who offers a number of Parent Enrichment activities to current families in the Hanahau'oli School community each year. The Hui Hanahau’oli is extending their resources to parents in the greater community during this challenging and historic time, and invites you to join parents from near and far in a quest to empower children to be self-advocates, problem solvers, and resilient learners.
